Since January 1, 2008 an application for certification as an Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) can be filed at the local responsible customs administration.
An AEO is a party involved in the international movement of goods in whatever function that has been approved by or on behalf of a national customs administration as complying with World Customs Organization (WCO) or equivalent supply chain security standards. AEO includes inter alia manufacturers, importers, exporters, brokers, carriers, consolidators, intermediaries, ports, airports, terminal operators, integrated operators, warehouses, distributors, etc.
There are three types of AEO certificates:
- AEO Certificate - Customs Simplification,
- AEO Certificate - Security & Safety,
- AEO Certificate - Customs Simplification / Security & Safety.
In general, AEO is similar to C-TPAT, but being C-TPAT certified does not entail to be certified as AEO.
Subsidiaries legally incorporated pursuant to national company law must file individual AEO applications with the Customs administration in the country where they are incorporated.
