Hapag-Lloyd - Three Giant Container Vessels Ordered

The transport and logistics group, Hapag-Lloyd has today ordered three container vessels from the Korean shipyard, Hyundai Heavy Industries, which will be delivered in 2005 and 2006. These newbuildings will have a length of about 330 metres, a width of 43 metres and a capacity of around 8,000 standard containers.

At the end of 2003 and beginning of 2004, Hapag-Lloyd will receive four further container vessels with a capacity each of 6,750 TEU. The Hamburg shipping company’s fleet will then comprise of some forty large container vessels. "This investment programme makes clear, that we are continuing to grow and want to consistently use development opportunities worldwide," commented Michael Behrendt, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG, on the order for the vessels. Günther Casjens, Member of Hapag-Lloyd AG Executive Board added: "We shall extend our position as one of the leading providers of global logistics solutions."

Hapag-Lloyd Container Linie has grown rapidly in recent years. Within some good ten years transport volume has trebled. In 2003 the number of containers carried should exceed 2 million standard containers (TEU = 20’ unit)
