The brutal and despicable acts of terrorism in the USA have shaken the world. We find it inconceivable that human beings are capable of inflicting such horror on one another. This vicious attack is an assault on freedom and democracy, intentionally aimed at innocent people. Our deepest sympathies go to all families affected by this frightful tragedy and indeed to the entire American people.
America has always possessed great significance for Hapag-Lloyd. Millions of German and European emigrants travelled on our ships, fleeing poverty or persecution to start a better life in the new world. They have contributed to building up a lively and exemplary democracy. We Germans have been able to experience this liberal attitude to a greater extent than other countries. We cannot forget the support of the American people after the second world war.
Today, too, we have been touched by the Americans' limitless readiness to help others in the wake of this terrible atrocity. We particularly admire and esteem the New York firefighters, police and countless helpers who with immense courage and self-sacrifice have been struggling to save lives. We should like to express our sense of solidarity by assisting the families of the victims of the catastrophe.
With a cheque for DM 1.5m to the United Way's September 11th Fund, the executive board of Hapag-Lloyd Group and its staff all over the world would like to contribute towards alleviating the material suffering caused by this tragedy.
