In March 2002 one of the world's most up-to-date transhipment centres, HHLA Container-Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) of Hamburger Hafen- und Lagerhaus AG (HHLA), will start operation. The first stage of the facility will have a transhipment capacity of 1.1 million TEU, increasing to 1.9 million TEU when the second stage is completed by the end of 2003. HHLA already manages the Burchardkai, Tollerort and Unikai container terminals in Hamburg.
The new Altenwerder terminal will be equipped with Post-Panamax container gantries for fast loading and unloading of even the largest containerships. Containers will be shifted between vessels and storage areas by driverless vehicles.
Hapag-Lloyd's 25.1 percent stake in CTA will give it the capacity necessary for further long-term growth at a strategically important transhipment hub for services to the Baltic region, Scandinavia as well as Central and Eastern Europe and with a high share of local cargo.
Along with its partners in the Grand Alliance, the world's largest consortium in international container liner shipping, Hapag-Lloyd is the most important customer of the Port of Hamburg.
